Idol Thoughts — 03.09.10

The Top 8 ladies performed tonight. And it’s a big night. If you survive this week, you have a better chance of sticking around for a bit. Only one singer gets bumped each week starting next week. So here we go…

Katie Stevens – “Breakaway” by Kelly Clarkson – Sounds a little flat to my ears. Still like her husky, smokey sound. But something wasn’t clicking for her on this one. Especially the first part of the song. She did finally follow the judges’ suggestion and sing a more contemporary song.

Siobhan Magnus – “House Of The Rising Sun” by The Animals – Props to her for picking another unexpected song–and making it not only her own, but making it work. She was vocally in control and all over this one. Nice a cappella intro. Judges love it. Except Simon Cowell, who seems to disagree that she made it her own.

Lacey Brown – “The Story” by Brandi Carlile – Lacey’s strongest performance since making the Top 24. Her distinctive vocal tool was well-employed tonight. Hopefully, Lacey will hear what the judges are saying about the song being a little sleepy. She could be in danger of seeming like a one-trick pony. I say next week, she should crank up the amps.

Katelyn Epperly – “I Feel The Earth Move” by Carole King – Not bad. But lacking that intangible–the thing that makes a performance transcendent. Yeah, okay. That’s a pretty hard standard to hit every single time. But I thought I’d point it out. A good performance. An OK effort. But it’s getting to the point of the competition where you need to hit home runs. Keep your eye on the ball, Katelyn, and swing a little harder.

Didi Benami – “Rhiannon” by Fleetwood Mac – We seem to have hit a stretch of the show with nothing but quiet, female singer-songwriter songs. Personally, I’d appreciate something a little bigger right about now. And maybe some tempo. But Didi’s is a solid version. Her performance tonight came together stronger than any other up to this point.

Paige Miles – “Smile” by Charlie Chaplin – I love this song. So I was excited to hear this. Paige is really scaling back her sound on this one; she’s normally much bigger-voiced. Hmmm. I’m not smiling about her version. She falls short tonight. She got the ominous, “I think this could be the end of the road” from Simon.

Crystal Bowersox – “Give Me One Reason” by Tracy Chapman – Looks like the first stages of a makeover are in effect for Crystal. Black dress working for her. Jammin’ on her electric guitar tonight. Solid, effortless blues. Crystal knows what she’s about. Head’s and shoulders above all the other ladies when it comes to that.

Lilly Scott – “I Fall To Pieces” by Patsy Cline – If anyone else was doing an “old-timey,” traditional country song, I’d say, “Start packing your bags.” But this is Lilly Scott–who gives Crystal Bowersox a run for her money in the “knowing what you’re about” department. Lilly makes it feel contemporary. Simon comments on her bravery. I say viewers reward the bold choice. But we’ll see.

Them is my thoughts? What you thinkin’?
